Birdcraft Museum and Sanctuary |

|
Established in 1914, Birdcraft includes an intimate Natural History Museum and a private Songbird Sanctuary -- the oldest in the U.S. The Museum features dioramas of Connecticut's wildlife as it existed at the turn of the century. The Four Seasons Room explores bird diversity throughout the years, and visitors can enjoy a honeybee observation hive, too. Birdcraft offers a variety of family activities throughout the year, as well as changing exhibitions. Call for calendar. The Sanctuary was originally planted as a 6 acre refuge to attract, harbor and feed migratory and resident birds. More than 120 different species have been documented here. Naturally, this is a great place for bird-watchers, photographers, and environmental study. A special attraction at Birdcraft is Bird Banding Demonstrations. Since 1979 Connecticut Audubon volunteers have operated a licensed bird banding station here, and have successfully banded and released more than 18,000 birds. Banding takes place during weekdays in spring (April through Memorial Day) and fall (mid-August through Thanksgiving). School Tours combine natural history, environmental awareness, and hands-on teaching methods for a rewarding outdoor experience for children and adults. Maximum group size: 25.
