The central structure of this sprawling 142-acre complex has a fascinating history all its own. Carroll County was created by 1837 legislation which also made Westminster the County Seat and established a number of government buildings, including an almshouse, which was built between 1852 and 1853.

The Almshouse, also called the County Home, employed a Steward at $400 per year, as well as other workers. Its purpose was to house the poor people of Carroll County, though transients could also be found here, as well as the insane or criminals. For them some of the rooms had barred windows and metal-lined walls.

During the week of June 28 to July 4, 1863, both Confederate and Union troops camped on the Almshouse grounds on their way to the Battle of Gettysburg.

Throughout its use, the Almshouse grounds were farmed for food for the inhabitants. And when its doors were closed to the poor in 1965, the property was turned into a Farm Museum dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of rural life in Carroll County and 19th-century rural America.

Visitors today can enjoy many exhibit buildings, a nature tail, and a flower and herb garden. A 19th-Century Landowning Farmer's Home, Horse-Drawn Vehicles, a Harvesting Exhibit, Hauling Exhibit, and an 1890's Country Veterinarian's Office are typical of the wide variety of exhibits to be found here.

A Blacksmith Shoppe can also be toured, as can a Tinsmith, Broomshop, Chair Caning Exhibit, Spinning/Weaving Exhibit, Quilting, and much more. This growing museum also has exciting plans for the future, including a 19th-Century Country Village, and a wonderful Exhibition Hall entitled, "The History of Farming in Maryland."

Throughout the year a full calendar of special events gives families and groups many reasons to return. Examples include a Civil War Encampment, Antique Show and Sale, Fiddler's Convention, Steam Show Days (antique farm machinery), Wine Festival, and much, much more. Call for a calendar. In addition to special events, families can enjoy a number of educational programs and workshops relating to farming, crafts, and history.

School Groups will find a valuable resource at the Farm through tours, demonstrations, and hands-on workshops. All grade levels can be accommodated. Call with your group's needs.
