Set amidst 150 acres of unspoiled native woodlands, Flat Rock Brook Nature Center provides an exceptional opportunity to enjoy the natural environment of Northern New Jersey. Part of a 150 acre woodland, the Center is a natural sanctuary and home to a wide variety of plant and animal life. Over 3.5 miles of trails wind through the sanctuary, and an 800 foot boardwalk loop is accessible to the disabled. The mission of Flat Rock Brook is to encourage every individual to develop an environmental ethic, and to explore practical actions which contribute to a cleaner, safer environment. A worthy mission, indeed. It accomplishes this partly by providing family programs designed to stimulate awareness, appreciation, and interest in the natural world, and promote a greater understanding of environmental issues confronting our future. Families and individuals can call for a calendar of events and activities. School Programs last from 60 to 90 minutes with varying topics for different age groups. Examples include:
Many additional programs are available. Call for complete details. Outreach programs are also available, covering Rain Forests, Raptors, or Recycling, and include pre- and post-activity packages to help students get the most from these lessons. Individually developed programs are available for special needs groups.
