The indoor galleries and Bowne & Co. Stationery shop are closed until further notice due to ongoing repairs to damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. Many of the Seaport's historical attractions are undergoing maintenance at this time. Visit the Museum's official website, linked above, or call for the latest information.

A virtual city within a city, South Street celebrates Old New York. It is a favorite place for New Yorkers and tourists to spend a day, visiting the many shops, and the Museum, which includes the beautiful ships at Pier 16. Some of the ships are open to visitation, and several offer exciting cruises, such as the Schooner Pioneer, the wooden tug W.O. Decker, the Ambrose lightship, the barque Peking, and the Schooner Lettie G. Howard. Great family programs are offered aboard some of these vessels, up to and including a week-long excursion aboard the Lettie G. Howard.

Museum buildings include

  • the Visitors' Center, providing Seaport orientation, tickets to ships, cruises, tours and exhibits
  • the Gallery, featuring changing exhibitions that illustrate New York's growth from fur trading post to booming city
  • Bowne & Co. Stationers, a 19th century printing shop
  • A.A. Low Building, with exhibits on New York's maritime heritage
  • Children's Center, offering exhibits, hands-on workshops, and maritime programs
  • Boat Building Shop, where visitors can watch skilled craftsmen build and restore small wooden vessels
  • and New York Unearthed, a permanent urban archaeology center.

Other fascinating exhibits, and beautiful 19th Century buildings and ships complete this Museum experience. Just about everyone will love it.

The Museum offers wonderful School Programs for grades K through 12. A few examples

  • Taste of the Sea (grades 3 thru 6): takes students aboard the bark Peking (at port) for an interactive tour and workshop demonstrating a sailor's work at sea
  • Something Fishy (K thru 5): is an interactive exhibition in the Children's Center illustrating how fish travel and change from sea to supper plate
  • Sail the Pioneer (grades 4 thru 12): introduces students to the practical aspects of sailing a vessel aboard this magnificent schooner.

Many other programs, including an overnighter aboard the Peking, give students a hands-on look at various aspects of life in old New York. Teachers workshops are also available. Some programs are seasonal. Most programs last about 90 minutes; for younger children, 1 hour.

For individuals, families, and groups, the Seaport is a remarkable resource for education, art, and pure fun. Great shops, fantastic food, and a romantic old world atmosphere combine to make a visit here one that will be remembered. Call ahead for current brochures and calendar of events. Something different is always going on.
