Designed by architect, Cesar Pelli, and located on the beautiful campus of Vassar College, the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center began exhibiting its extensive permanent collection in late 1993. The permanent collection features important examples of works from antiquity to the present by artists such as Pieter Bruegel the Younger, Frederic Church, Paul Cézanne, Georgia O'Keeffe, Francis Bacon, and many others. Changing exhibitions are also scheduled throughout the year. A sampling of past exhibitions includes, Florentine Masters: Two Centuries of Disegno from Leonardo to Volterrano: a collection of eighty-six exquisite Italian Renaissance and Baroque master drawings; Of City and Sea: Works on Paper by John Marin: wonderful watercolors and prints representing the New England coastline and New York City; and The Felix M. Warburg Print Collection: The Legacy of Discernment: more than 160 fine Old Master woodcuts, engravings, and etchings, including works by Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt. The Center can accommodate just about all age groups, from Elementary Grades through senior citizens. The artwork presented is classic, and teachers will want to consider younger students' interests. Nearby wineries and historic sites can be combined with a visit to provide a full day of recreation, education, and culture. Vassar's Alumnae House even offers overnight accommodations by reservation (call 914-437-7000).
