Nestled amidst a 235-acre greenbelt, the 33-acre Nature Center features a beautiful woodland with a brook, pond, and rock outcroppings providing habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, including mammals and eight species of reptiles and amphibians. The property is at the junction of two bird migration flyways, offering sanctuary to spring and fall migrating song birds. Visitors can also enjoy a Rock Garden, Herb Garden, a Maple Sugaring area and more outside. Inside the Manor House a Nature Museum features a variety of exotic and local animals, many of which can be handled by the public. A Greenhouse offers botanical exhibits and programs. GNC also offers a wide range of nature-related Family Programs as well as classes in arts and crafts. Special Events include concerts, performances, lectures and more. Call for a calendar. School Groups have a special treat with about 20 great programs offered for pre-K through grade 12. Programs can also be custom-made for your group's needs. A few of the standards are Animal Adaptations (pre-K - 3): a nature hike and handling some GNC animals helps students learn about this subject; Orienteering (4 - 7): students practice with map and compass; To Build or Not to Build (8 - 12): a two-hour seasonal program analyzing the environmental impact of a hypothetical office mall at two sites on the grounds. The other programs are just as great, covering various nature-related subjects. Most programs last 90 minutes (60 for pre-K - 1). Extended Day visits include two programs. Outreach Programs (like the popular Egg to Chick) are also available, including versions of some on-site programs, as are programs for Adult Groups.
