Explore turn-of-the-century maritime activities on the shores of the Great South Bay. Overlooking the Fire Island Lighthouse and Captree Bridge, this museum features seamans' crafts, shipwreck artifacts, life saving equipment, ship models, and Long Island shellfish. The Oyster House demonstrates how oysters were processed. This was West Sayville's main industry until the hurricane of 1938 wiped out the oysters. At the docks, visitors can view the schooner, Priscilla; the sloop, Modesty, and tugboat, Charlotte. And the authentic West Sayville Dutch Cottage illustrates the bayman's family life in the 1890's. Long Island's maritime heritage comes to life the Museum's nine historic buildings on fourteen beautiful acres on the Great South Bay. Among a number of special events is the annual Vintage Boat Show, in early summer.
