As Long Island's largest waste - to - energy facility, American Ref - Fuel provides safe disposal for the residential and commercial waste generated in the nation's most populated township -- Hempstead.

In a nutshell, it works like this:

• Non-recyclable waste materials are brought to the plant six days a week without any presorting or shredding.
• The material is treated mechanically to promote thorough combustion.
• The material is burned, and hot gases created by the combustion process are used to generate steam.
• The steam drives a 72 - megawatt turbine generator that produces electricity for in - plant use and sale to a local utility.
• Combustion gases pass through a scrubber for the removal of acid gases, and a fabric filter system removes particulate matter.
• The remaining ash is trucked away and disposed of separately.
• The end result is waste disposed of cleanly, efficiently, and safely.

This state-of-the-art technology, developed by the German firm of Deutsche Babcok, is licensed exclusively to American Ref- Fuel and has been installed in more than 60 facilities worldwide.Groups of all ages now have the opportunity to witness this process first hand and learn more through a Video Presentation and conference room discussion. Tours last approximately 1½ hours and are available to any group of interested people 10 years old and over. Each tour can handle a maximum of 25 people.
