Founded in 1971, the Bronx Museum of the Arts is an outstanding community resource exhibiting 20th-century and contemporary art through its central Museum space and a network of galleries.

In its 11,000 square feet of galleries, classrooms, and an auditorium, the Museum presents exhibitions and publications on 20th-century art and contemporary art and artists, exhibitions on themes of special interest to the Bronx, and innovative education programs for children, adults and groups.

The Permanent Collection features more than 800 works of art, primarily by artists from Africa, Asia and Latin America, including paintings, photographs, prints, drawings, and mixed media. Exhibitions from the Permanent Collection and changing exhibitions focus on a wide range of topics including historical and contemporary issues of cultural relevance to the Bronx.

BMA offers great Educational Programs for adults and children and is developing a Multimedia Center that will offer advanced computer and digital video post-production technology to artists and young adults.

Throughout the year a full calendar of activities gives the entire family something fun and educational to do. Concerts, Lectures, Seminars, Classes and other activities are offered on weekends and some weekday evenings. Call for the calendar.

School Programs includes, among others, Interpretive Day School (pre-K - grade 12): children work with a Museum-trained artist/instructor on an exhibition-related theme. Includes a gallery Tour and Art Workshop. Public Art: Then and Now (elementary & up) is a special interpretive program created in collaboration with the Lehman College Art Gallery. Students receive a coordinated tour of both galleries.
