Longwood Gardens, America's premier public display garden, is a sprawling, 1,050 acre estate containing more than twenty-two breathtaking sites. There is something special here for every season. It began in 1798 as Pierce's Park, featuring a small arboretum planted by Samuel and Joshua Pierce. Pierre du Pont bought the park in 1906, continued its development, and left it for public enjoyment. Today four hundred employees and volunteers keep Longwood Gardens beautiful. The park's creators are both represented here, with Pierce's Park containing trees that were planted 200 years ago, and the 1730 Pierre-du Pont House which served as Pierre's country retreat from 1906 to 1954. Among the outdoor gardens, visitors can enjoy The Flower Garden Walk designed by Pierre du Pont, the Italian Water Gardens with its formal tiled pools and sparkling fountains, the Wisteria Garden, Peony Garden, and the arches of pink climbing roses of the Rose Arbor. The aquatic Waterlily display is inspirational, and the Idea Garden is great for the home gardener. There is much more, including 20 indoor gardens. The indoor Children's Garden is a wonderful learning tool. With 11,000 different kinds of plants, spectacular illuminated fountains, and an Outdoor Theatre, Longwood Gardens offers beauty for all the senses. More than 400 performing arts events, including concerts and plays, are presented each year. The annual Festival of Fountains is a spectacular summer-long extravaganza with ongoing performances among more than 1,700 fountains. Don't miss this. The Terrace Restaurant features a great menu and can accommodate groups (by reservation) as well as individuals and families. Individuals and families can benefit from the many educational features of the Gardens. From family Workshops to Professional Gardener Training to College Internship Programs and Continuing Education, Longwood is the answer for anyone wanting to study horticulture, landscaping, wildlife management and much more.
