Already famous on the East Coast, Herr's continues to grow from the small Lancaster potato chip factory 21-year old James Stauffer Herr bought in 1946. Fifty years and two towns later, the company is settled in Nottingham, employing 1,000 people and distributing a wide variety of snack products throughout nine states.

A Factory Tour is interesting, fun, and an education in modern production methods. Visitors will see how potatoes are chosen based on their specific gravity, and then watch the spuds being washed and cooked and qualified -- rejects are expelled with a blast of air. The secret of making rippled chips is revealed. And the chips are then seasoned, packaged, and shipped in Herr's own trucks.

Other snacks will be seen in the making, too. Cheese curls, popcorn, tortillas, and pretzels (a ton and a half per hour!) take shape on the spot. The tour also includes an informative film presentation.

Naturally, people become hungry on this tour. That's where the free snacks come in. In addition, there is a snack bar with hot dogs and beverages.

Nothing goes to waste here, by the way. Potato peels, and even those rejected chips, are devoured by snacking cattle on Herr's 400-acre farm. Potato waste water is used to irrigate the fields. Families and Groups are welcome, especially School Groups, and children can have a great birthday party here.
