In 1937 Milton Hershey opened a 3½-acre rose garden that attracted more than 20,000 visitors in a single day. By 1941 the garden had expanded to 23 acres featuring seasonal displays as well as a growing collections of specimen trees such as the giant sequoia, oriental spruce, copper beech and others. Since then the collections have expanded greatly. Today visitors can enjoy a magnificent Rock Garden with its collections of dwarf evergreens, an Herb Garden, Japanese Garden with its Shinto Bridge and island, and the Memorial Garden dedicated to the men and women of our Armed Forces. The Plant Doctor's Garden is here -- trial vegetable gardens planted by WHP-TV's Noel Falk. Of course, visitors can view several outstanding Rose Garden's, including Mrs. Hershey's Garden featuring the varieties she grew in 1907. While educational programs are not currently available, they may be soon, so interested teachers should call.
