Connecticut River Expeditions: RiverQuest |
|||||||||||||
|
Departing from its dock in Eagle Landing State Park, Riverquest offers a variety of exciting educational excursions along the picturesque Connecticut River. One- to two-hour-long cruises take in sites such as a beautiful Nature Conservancy area, an eagles' nest (with varying degrees of visibility, depending on the season), famous Gillette's Castle, the Chester/Hadlyme Ferry -- the second oldest operating ferry in the United States -- and more, as Captain Mark and crew narrate about local history and point out interesting features and facts. The owners of Connecticut River Expeditions, Captain Mark and Mindy (who serves as crew usually on weekends and evenings), grew up locally, have been exploring the lower Connecticut River and Long Island Sound since childhood, and love to answer questions about the river, its history, ecology, and the abundance of wildlife that call this area home. Visitors will find a cruise to be fun, educational and relaxing, with plenty of opportunities for nature watching, photography, or just enjoying the smooth ride. Throughout the year each season has something special to offer for families and groups of all ages. Periodically, thematic cruises such as Osprey Cruises, Tree Swallow Cruises, Foliage Cruises, and others offer folks unique opportunities to enjoy special aspects of the river. The Selden Island Exploration Cruise includes a two-hour hike to explore this 610-acre island's ecology, geology, and fascinating history as the location of a prominent granite quarry. Check the official website for further details on excursions. Private charters are also available. Educational Programs, available for groups of all ages, from pre-K through adult, can cover a variety of subjects, from fish and bird identification to ecology to area history and can include a beach landing. Call to discuss your needs. All in all, Connecticut River Expeditions and the Riverquest are a wonderful asset for the state and visitors from all around. It's a labor of love for the owners and crew, and their dedication to promoting this beautiful area is always evident.
