Founded in 1979, The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts is a fabulous resource for artists and those who appreciate fine art. Indeed, DCCA was established by artists, and artists continue to play an important role in policy making. DCCA's commitment to art and its community is exemplified in one of its mission statements: "Exhibitions and programs will include, but not be limited to, work that explores the boundaries of contemporary art, reflects the interests of artists and the community and brings into focus national directions and current issues . . . ."

The Center includes four galleries which, combined, present some twenty-seven exhibitions each year. The Main Gallery features works by both emerging and nationally recognized artists. Thematic exhibits highlight national trends. The Elizabeth Avery Draper Showcase Gallery features contemporary crafts. The Member's Gallery shows the works of regional artists. And the Member's Gallery (at the Delaware Center for Horticulture) highlights regional artists who work with traditional floral, landscape and horticultural themes.

Representative of the quality to be found here was the recent exhibition, Return to Beauty. Unlike many exhibitions that focus on social or political themes, this show presented the works of some thirty-six living American artists -- works that were created in a variety of media simply for the sake of beauty. Paintings and prints were excluded from this wonderful exhibition of works in stone, metal and other materials.

In addition to great exhibitions, DCCA offers a variety of programs for the family, including Artist and Critic-in-residence programs, gallery talks, and public forums. Artists have a fantastic resource here with workshops, exhibition opportunities, and inexpensive studio rental.

Schools also have a unique resource here. DCCA works with individual schools to provide its comprehensive Contemporary Connections Program that offers teachers and students new ways to relate to art. One school per year is worked with on this program. Interested teachers should call for information.

School Groups of all ages can enjoy a Guided Tour. DCCA works with educators to ensure that the tour is appropriate to the curriculum. Teacher Workshops are also available.
