A sprawling museum complex, Hagley includes more than 230 acres of trees and flowering shrubs. Located along the beautiful Brandywine River, Hagley Museum occupies the site of the first du Pont black powder works.

Among the great features at Hagley is Henry Clay Mill, with exhibits tracing America's expansion from small water-powered mills through the Industrial Revolution. At the The Powder Yard visitors will see massive stone mills, storehouses and a waterwheel that bring to life the day when waterpower was the source of energy. The millstreams still channel water to operate the machinery, and powdermen and machinists demonstrate a water turbine, steam engine, powder tester, and a working machine shop. Exhibits and working models interpret the economic and technological history of the Brandywine region.

At Blacksmith Hill, visitors will see costumed interpreters re-enacting late nineteenth century life in the Gibbons House, home to powder yard foremen and their families. The 1817 Brandywine Manufacturer's Sunday School taught the mill workers' children.

Eleutherian Mills can also be toured. This first du Pont family home was built in 1803. The beautiful Georgian-style house is furnished with antiques and memorabilia of five generations of du Ponts. A restored French-style garden, created by E.I. du Pont, adjoins the house.

The Hagley Library is a fine research facility for exploring our cultural and business-related history from the late 18th century to the present.

Families can enjoy Hagley on their own or join a Guided Tour. A variety of special events and seasonal tours entice people to come back.

Groups (15 or more people) of all ages, including School Groups, can enjoy one of several specialized tours lasting from two to five hours. Luncheon/Tours are also available for groups.
