Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the nation, Winterhur, the legacy of Henry Francis du Pont, offers families and groups a chance to get away for a quiet afternoon or day of culture and art. Winterhur features outstanding changing exhibitions of American decorative arts in the Thomas A. Graves, Jr. Gallery, and tours of the mansion's Period Rooms. The Touch-it Room is an exciting experience for the entire family. A Jacob's ladder, a bean bag, and other toys and objects like those used in the 18th and 19th centuries can be handled here. Visitors can explore an 1830-style country store to get the feeling of what life was like a long time ago. One of America's premier naturalistic gardens, Winterhur brightens each season with different blooms in a kaleidoscope of color and form. Individuals and families can tour most areas of Winterhur on their own, or join a one of the Guided Tours: Introduction to Winterhur: a one-hour adventure for all ages through selected period rooms; Decorative Arts Tour: a one- or two-hour tour for ages 12 and older; or a Garden Walk: a seasonal guided walk through the garden. Similar tours are available for Groups, including School Groups. Preceding or following a tour, the Visitor Pavilion is the perfect place for a continental breakfast or lunch. Family events are a specialty here throughout the year, with something happening almost every weekend, from special exhibitions to seminars to first-rate performances. Call for the current calendar. An outstanding Library for research of history and art is also available. Winterhur also administers the Historic Houses of Odessa.
