Cape May Bird Observatory Northwood Center |

For two centuries Cape May has been the location for observing birds in North America, favored by celebrated naturalists such as John Audubon, Tory Peterson and others. More than 400 different species have been seen on the peninsula during fall migration. It is known for spectacular flights of Peregrines, Merlins, Ospreys, and Sharp-shinned Hawks. In 1975 the New Jersey Audubon Society founded the Cape May Bird Observatory (CMBO) as a leader in education, research, conservation, and recreational birding programs. Located in one of the most beautiful spots in the world, CMBO offers outstanding opportunities for birders and nature lovers to enjoy themselves and learn. Research projects undertaken by CMBO include Raptor Migration Counts, with the largest raptor banding operation in the world. Remarkable findings are routine. For instance, a Peregrine Falcon banded at Cape May was found 4 days later in Florida! CMBO also monitors songbirds, shorebirds and seabirds -- even butterflies -- gathering important information on the needs and habits of these creatures. One of the most important weapons in fighting the onslaught against our environment is education. CMBO shines here with a multitude of programs for individuals and families, as well as groups of all kinds. To begin there is a calendar of special events, presentations and workshops covering a variety of bird- and nature-related topics. They range from lessons for beginning bird watchers, to week-long field trips, to opportunities for seasoned bird watchers to help on important projects. There are even internship opportunities for undergraduate college students. School Groups of all ages can participate in any number of field trips that will be designed in collaboration with teachers.
