Founded in 1980 as the New York Chinatown History Project, the Museum of Chinese in the Americas -- MoCA -- presents a wonderful opportunity for families and groups to explore the diversity of American history and culture.

New York is home to America's largest Chinatown, and it is here, on the second floor of an historic century-old school building, that the Museum has made its home.

Within the Museum's doors, visitors will find a variety of interesting permanent and changing exhibitions. Artifacts, art, photos, papers, oral histories, and other objects document the history of the Chinese in the Americas, how they faced their challenges, and their contributions to American society and values.

An exhibit entitled, Lee Mingwei: The Travelers and The Quartet Project, documents the personal stories of Chinese Americans, exploring the ways people have addressed the difficulties of leaving their home and settling in a new world. An interactive sound installation (The Quartet Project) invites viewers' participation as their movements dictate the production of each of the four parts of Antoine Dvorak's American String Quartet on monitors in a darkened room.

Exhibits change from time to time, and those described here are but examples of what the Museum has to offer.

In addition to the permanent exhibitions, MoCA offers changing exhibitions that illustrate various aspects of the Chinese American experience, and a calendar of special programs and events provides educational activities for families and students throughout the year.

Group Programs include activities such as Self-Guided Visits, guided Walking Tours and Gallery Programs. Loan Programs are available for classrooms. Group minimums may apply. Call for more information, or click on the link at the top of this page to visit MoCA's official website.
