Though a little farther from New York than most places on this website, the Kingston area contains such a concentration of Hudson River history that it certainly qualifies for a full day's trip.

The Maritime Museum features exhibits -- models, artifacts, photographs, and paintings -- that tell the tales of a bygone era when the Hudson teemed with commercial activity and vessels. One such exhibition, current as of this writing, Destination Catskill Mountains, is a multi-media profile of a family's journey from the docks of New York City to the resorts of the Catskills via boat and railroad. The rich history of the Hudson River is brought to life in this unique view of our past.

The Outdoor Exhibit area features the 1898 steam tug Mathilda, as well as a 100-year-old shad boat, a life boat from the steamboat Mary Powell, and other relics of river life.

Visiting vessels, such as the famous sloop Clearwater, Coast Guard Cutters, or other historic ships may be seen here from time to time.

The Museum is the launching point for a visit to the famous Rondout Lighthouse, via the Dirigo, a 58-passenger enclosed marine vessel. There is a separate charge for the excursion, though a discount is given to passengers with a ticket to the Maritime Museum.

The Historic Rondout area itself is a revitalized 19th century waterfront community, complete with a Visitor Center, boutiques, antique shops, art galleries, and a number of colorful restaurants.

A full calendar of events for families includes special presentations, visiting historic ships, slide shows, boat shows, and many other great activities, not to mention the Annual Shad Festival.

A great School Program for all grade levels includes a guided Museum Tour plus a trip to the Rondout Lighthouse. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn the history of the Hudson, a river of immeasurable importance to this area and to the nation.
