Marshlands is a 137 acre sanctuary with a half mile of shoreline, woods, fields, fresh water ponds and an extensive salt marsh -- one of the few in New York State accessible to the public. The area provides diverse habitat for a variety of wildlife, including mammals, shellfish, birds, and waterfowl, which use the relatively undisturbed shore to lay their eggs. The patient and quiet visitor may see fox and hawks, herons, egrets, and many other species. With three miles of trails and the shore, it's a great place for a family nature walk (pets not allowed), for the individual naturalist, bird watchers and photographers. Family Weekend Programs are offered throughout much of year, and they are always informative and educational. A calendar is obtainable for a phone call or letter. School Programs are available for students from elementary through college. The subject matter is geared to the needs and interests of the group, but suggested topics include, General Introduction to Habitats: done either as an in-depth study of one habitat or as a comparison of several; Flowering Plants: introduces flowering plants from trees and shrubs to wildflowers and grasses, examining development from seed to flower to fruit; and Invertebrates of the Air, Soil, and Intertidal Zone (April through November): offers a close look at a great diversity of invertebrates including insects, worms, slugs, millipedes, snails, crabs, and others. Emphasis is on adaptation, behavior, and role in the ecosystem. Programs are adaptable to all ages and last about 2 hours. A group may also visit without taking a program, but must still register in advance. Maximum group size is 30.
