Comprised of over 500 acres of fields, woodlands, and estate grounds, including six diverse natural habitats and several miles of marked trails, Muttontown Preserve offers a significant opportunity for individuals, families, and groups to get out and explore the natural environment. Several marked nature trails are interpreted with self - guiding maps and brochures on the local wildflowers, trees, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. People can go Cross - Country Skiing here, and Horse Trails wind through the Preserve. Youth groups can rent conservation camp sites, and there are a variety of School Programs for grades pre - K through College. Communities in Nature (grades 3 - College): explores several different habitats to develop basic concepts about biotic communities; Mini - Worlds (grades 2 - 4): utilizes hand lenses and natural objects to discover the ordinarily unseen microcosms that exist in the world around us; Nature's Seasons (grades pre-K - 3): a walk through the woods in search of sensory clues to the signs of the seasons; Woodland Ecology (grades 4 - College): explores and compares a wet woods and a dry upland woods; Pond Community (grades 4 - College): investigates the interrelationships and physical characteristics of the plants and animals that live in and around a pond; and Sugaring - Off (grades 3 - 9): explores the process of making natural maple syrup, from tapping trees to boiling down the sap (late Feb. & early March only). Custom Programs can be tailored to the specific needs of students. Popular topics include orienteering, bird watching, and glacial geology.
