Recently renovated, this very special museum is home to 100 years of transit lore and memorabilia. Housed in an authentic 1930's Subway Station, it offers a great variety of new galleries and exhibits, many of which have interactive components that will thrill straphangers, art lovers and history lovers alike. Highlights Include:

On the Streets: New York's Trolleys and Buses
Built around a simulated traffic intersection -- a very realistic intersection with all the trappings of the real thing -- this exhibit introduces visitors to 175 years of the history of above ground mobility through audio interviews with Transit Department personnel, a photo essay entitled, A Day in the Life of a Bus, and for the kids, a twelve-seat bus, refurbished 1960's bus cab, and a child-sized trolley that they can enjoy. Clearing the Air is an interactive segment of On the Streets that illustrates the evolution of fuel technologies, and the Dr. George T.F. Rahilly Trolley and Bus Study Center features over fifty detailed models of trolleys and work cars.

Moving the Millions: New York City's Subways from its Origins to the Present
Through photographs, diagrams, cartoons, period newspaper clippings, and historical maps, this exhibit tells the fascinating story of the development of the largest transportation network in North America, all capped off with the Museum's vintage collection of subway cars and elevated trains, all lovingly restored to perfection and available for boarding. There's even a working signal tower that people can visit -- one of those cool things that we don't have access to every day. And it doesn't stop there.

The Museum offers many other exhibits, covering virtually every aspect of New York's public rail transportation system. From the subways to the Els, the monumental achievments and the people who made them are presented to visitors in a beautiful, interesting and nostalgic environment that rewards the curious with a better understanding of how we got here and where we are going.

Finally, the Sanford Gaster Education Center offers a new computer resource center and an area for conducting workshops and hands-on activities for youngsters. There's even an online education site called, New York Transit Museum >> Connected. Visitors can link to www.transitmuseumeducation.org/
