This fascinating museum displays more than 1,000 objects reflecting Brooklyn's exciting history. Permanent exhibit areas cover The Brooklyn Bridge, Coney Island, Brooklynites, The Brooklyn Navy Yard, and The Brooklyn Dodgers. Here visitors will find such intriguing items as a gigantic eagle that adorned the offices of a famous newspaper and a wheel used to spin the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge. 18th-century furniture, paintings, prints, photographs and other memorabilia bring Brooklyn's history to life. Changing exhibitions explore various facets of the borough's history in depth. Throughout the year a full calendar of special events, presentations, workshops and programs offers families wonderful opportunities for learning and getting involved. Many are a great treat for children. As a family resource, the Museum even offers After School Programs and even a Summer Camp Program. Operated by the Brooklyn Historical Society, the Museum is an important research tool, especially when combined with the Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer Library, which features the largest collection of Brooklyn-related books, graphic images, and newspaper clippings in existence. School and Youth Groups will find hands-on programs with an emphasis on cultural diversity. One popular title is Many Faces, Many Ways: The Multicultural Diversity of Brooklyn, designed to familiarize children with the concept of culture and to encourage them to appreciate their own cultures as well as those of their neighbors. Other programs take children on tours of Brooklyn, help them learn Brooklyn's history, and more. Museums such as this offer a wholesome experience, and a very personal look at ourselves.
