Hailed as New York's fastest growing cultural center, Snug Harbor was established in 1833 on the site of a former home for retired naval and merchant seamen. Today the 83-acre site is home to more than 70 organizations in 28 historic buildings. Ongoing restoration and expansion projects has seen Snug Harbor grow significantly in recent years, adding such organizations as the Staten Island Museum (Staten Island Institute of Arts & Sciences) and the Noble Maritime Collection, Staten Island's newest museum. Devoted to the works and life of celebrated maritime artist John A. Noble, the Collection includes 80 lithographs, paintings, 600 of his "rowboat sketches", various maritime memorabilia, and a collection of 5,000 photographs of New York Harbor. As well as being a showcase for art and history, the Noble Collection offers engaging education programs for students of all ages and teacher training and makes professional printmaking studios available to artists. . An 800-seat Music Hall will also be renovated to present concerts, full-scale dance performances, and the atrical and musical productions. Meanwhile, there is plenty happening at Snug Harbor right now. The Staten Island Children's Museum is here. And visitors will enjoy Performing Arts in both indoor and outdoor presentations. Visual Arts are presented through a nationally acclaimed Sculpture Garden and the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, which features exhibitions of emerging and mid-career artists working in all media. A wide range of Educational Programs and Workshops are offered in conjunction with current exhibitions, and the Staten Island Botanical Garden offers beautiful gardens and displays, as well as horticultural information. There's much more. A full calendar of events offers exciting activities for the entire family throughout the year. Many things to many people, Snug Harbor also offers outstanding programs and opportunities for the region's artists, regardless of the media they use.
