Exhibiting a portion of the enormous European art collection of entrepreneur Samuel H. Kress (Kress Five and Dime Stores), the Allentown Art Museum features the works of masters such as Giovanni del Biondo (late 1300's), Gregor Erhart (late 1500's), Hans Maler (early 1500's), Frans van Mieris, The Elder (1600's) and others. Work is presented in a variety of media, including oil and sculpture, and represents a balanced survey of Italian Renaissance art as well as fine Dutch and German paintings. Kress' original bequest was amplified several times over the years and provides an outstanding opportunity for people of all ages to appreciate classic art. While much of the Museum's focus seems to be on European art, visitors will also enjoy permanent displays of 200 years of American art, the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright and much more. In addition to the permanent installations, the Museum offers a number of thematic exhibitions throughout the year that are sure to please art lovers and historians, as well as the general public. Some exhibitions feature the work of local artists. Seminars, workshops and other activities are also available, making the Museum a great resource for all family members. Individuals and families tour the Museum on their own, while groups of all ages can reserve a guided tour. School Programs are offered for children at all grade levels, from Pre-K through college. Programs consist of guided tours that are designed accommodate the grade level and interest of the group. 10 or more people comprise a group. Other educational services include a slide show loan program (pay for postage) and the travelling Troupers program that brings the Museum to the classroom (POSA districts). A six-week art history course (annual) can also be arranged for individual students. Finally, teachers can take advantage of a free exhibition and workshop given for them once per year. Call for details. All in all, this fine museum has much to offer for its communities as well as for visitors from out of town.
