One of the greatest, most far-reaching environmental centers within driving distance of Philadelphia is in the city itself, on the outskirts in the Roxborough section. This sprawling environmental center features a wide range of services, from educational programs for families and groups to wildlife rehabilitation, and everything in between. The Wildlife Preserve: Over 400 acres of pristine land -- fields, thickets, forests, and along streams and ponds, with 4 miles of trails -- are maintained as habitats for a large variety of birds, mammals and reptiles. Two bird blinds provide great viewing and photo opportunities. The Education Building features classrooms, a lab, auditorium, gift shop, and a hands-on Discovery Center. The Environmental Resource Center includes an extensive natural history library and teacher aid materials. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center provides medical treatment and a temporary refuge for more than 4,000 birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians each year. Ultimately, the Center releases rehabilitated animals into their proper habitats. Some animals are used in educational programs, giving students a close-up look at wildlife while teaching them what we need to do to help these species continue to exist. Note that the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center does not offer tours. The Center offers a wide range of educational programs, workshops, and special events for the entire family. Membership is encouraged, and members' children can enjoy a great nature-related birthday party for a very reasonable fee. School Groups can choose from many hands-on field trips that address important ecological issues. For more information, please contact the Center to receive a "Learning Opportunities" brochure. Regional Environmental Education Programs, for grades K - 12, consist of a special series of programs designed by teachers and approved by the PA Dept. of Education. Each series takes 30 - 45 hours to complete. Call for further details.
