Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach and his brother, Philip achieved international fame in the early 1900's as dealers in rare books and manuscripts. In particular, Dr. Rosenbach was considered the best in the world at his trade. And he never missed the opportunity to acquire prized works for himself. With uncanny insight, he built the finest collection of its type in the nation.

The collections are contained in Dr. Rosenbach's former home, a spectacular Civil War - period mansion on Delancey Place. Visitors will enjoy a tour of the house, furnished as it is with important 18th and 19th century English and American furniture, silver, paintings, and decorative arts. Of course, the main reason for a visit is the outstanding collections.

History has a wonderful marriage with art in this museum. Among the many exhibits, visitors can see:

• John Tenniel's drawings for Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, and Carroll's own copy of the book
• The Literary Archive and Library of Modernist poet Marianne Moore (her Greenwich Village apartment is re-created here)
• Maurice Sendak's original artwork for such books as Where the Wild Things Are
• The earliest complete printed copy (1482) of the Pentateuch (first five books of the Old Testament) in Hebrew

Much more is presented throughout each year through three major exhibitions. The artwork to be found in some of these old books and manuscripts is simply breathtaking. Additional, smaller exhibitions celebrate local and national holidays, and literary and historical events. The Museum also offers a series of lectures and readings, as well as special events such as the annual celebration of James Joyce's Ulysses and other of his works.Groups (8 or more people) are welcome to tour, and the Museum frequently provides tours for School Groups interested in a unique experience in art and history. Special curatorial presentations can also be arranged for School and other Groups, depending upon availability of staff. Note, this museum is not recommended for children under 12.
