Chartered by an act of the Pennsylvania legislature on June 9, 1832, Strasburg Railroad has operated for more than a century and a half, connecting its community with the nation's rail system -- providing both passenger and freight service. It is America's oldest short line railroad.

The equipment has been authentically restored to its turn-of-the-century glory, and includes four steam locomotives and fourteen passenger cars. Visitors can ride in splendor in a parlor car that features coal oil lamps, ancient pot belly stoves, and plush seats. Perhaps one of the open-air observation cars would be preferred -- they are quite popular for the great view they allow. Or the simple charm of a restored wooden coach might be just the thing. Other passengers might want to enjoy lunch on the Lee Brenner Dining Car enroute to their destination. And how fitting that the destination is Paradise . . . Paradise, PA, that is.

The 45-minute round-trip ride passes through the heart of Lancaster County's picturesque Amish Country. Farmed by the Plain People, the Amish, Mennonites and Dunkards, this fertile countryside has remained virtually unchanged for more than one hundred years. The people themselves carry on their business of living as though time never passed. Rather than tractors and combines, riders on the Strasburg Railroad will see farmers using their horse-drawn implements of old.

The return trip makes a stop at Groff's Picnic Grove, a beautiful spot accessible only by railroad. The Grove is equipped with tables, fireplaces, drinking water, and outhouse facilities, so visitors need only bring food. Visitors may picnic for a while, then catch the next westbound train to return to the East Strasburg Depot, the starting point.

The Depot, built in 1882, is typical of the stations one would encounter in small towns at the turn of the century. It houses the ticket office, as well as a gift shop stocked with railroad related items, books, videos and more. Also located at the mall is the Dining Car Restaurant, serving snacks, light meals, and beverages.

Finally, the observation car Paradise can be visited. This private car, built for the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad at the turn of the century, is the ultimate in class and comfort with its solid vermilion mahogany panels inlaid with lustrous rosewood. This was how the rich traveled.

A ride on the Strasburg Railroad is like riding a work of art. It is a thrilling experience for young and old, providing a perfect family outing. Groups (20 or more) of all ages will consider it a special treat.
