When the Marine Mammal Stranding Center was established in 1978 there were nineteen reported strandings in the State of New Jersey. Just fifteen years later the Center responded to 123. From its small base in Brigantine, the Center and its volunteers have come to the aid of more than 1,000 stranded whales, dolphins, seals, and sea turtles. Whenever possible the animals are brought back to the Center for rehabilitation and eventually released. First and foremost the Center is a refuge and hospital for marine mammals, part of a network that extends along the Atlantic coastline from Maine to Virginia. It is a membership organization that invites public participation in tracking dolphins and rescuing these and other animals when in trouble. Visitors are welcome to the Sea Life Museum, a small education facility which includes hands-on exhibits and from time to time offers marine ecology-based educational programs. Call for details. School Groups can also tour the facility and participate in a program. Teachers should call to discuss their specific needs with Center staff.
