Founded in 1888, this museum interprets the struggle for freedom, equality and national unity in 19th century America, in order to inspire a better understanding of that struggle and a renewed dedication to its importance today.

The Museum owns an impressive collection of firearms, edged weapons, uniforms, accouterments, and flags which tell the story of the War from many different points of view. Visitors can view these items in a number of exhibits. Some of the unique artifacts on display belonged to Generals Grant, Sherman, Meade, Mulholland, and Gregg, and Admirals Farragut and Porter.

One gallery features changing exhibits, so people can enjoy something new on each visit. Women in the War, the Black Soldier, Military Railroads, and Technology and English Contributions are just some of the many fascinating topics that have been presented and represent the quality of future exhibits to be enjoyed.

Throughout the year the Museum also sponsors a series of special events and family programs. Call for a calendar. For serious Civil War buffs, the Civil War Roundtable is an associated organization which meets monthly.
