This museum was America's first to be dedicated to the history of a city, and today provides an opportunity for people of all ages to appreciate New York's unique and important history.

The Museum's galleries feature three centuries of paintings, prints, photographs, silver, furniture, costumes, doll houses, fire engines, and theatre memorabilia, combining to tell the story of New York and New Yorkers from the time the City was a small Dutch trading post to today's towering urban center.

Special changing Exhibitions explore the City's cultural diversity, creative genius, architectural accomplishments, and economic significance.

The Big Apple Film reveals the evolution of the City and its people, lending insight into this vibrant community.

Offered are a host of Public Programs and Educational Services for individuals and families. Walking Tours, Family Programs, Lecture Series, Performing Arts, Adult Courses and Workshops, and Special Events help make this museum a great place.

School Programs for grades pre-K through 12 include A Closer Look: a hands-on, Guided Tour of the exhibits, and a Self-Guided Tour, which includes pre-visit material a teacher can use to help prepare lessons.

Similar tours are available for college and adult groups. In addition, the Museum offers a variety of Teacher Workshops, including one to help teachers prepare their students for participation in the New York City History Fair.

This Museum, by the way, had its beginning in Gracie Mansion, traditional home of the Mayor.
